Dive into Danger

The couple tried to conserve energy by staying in the same place. David knew that splashing on the surface of the water was likely to attract predators, especially sharks. He had also heard a rumour of two large hammerhead sharks that had been bothering local fisherman for some time. He kept this to himself.

Melissa was angry. How had David allowed this to happen? After a few cross words, they turned away from one another and were alarmed at how quickly the current took them apart. From this moment on, they tied themselves together.

Although plenty of rescue boats were searching for them, the boatmen didn't know where to look. David and Melissa had drifted miles from the dive site. After four hours in the water, Melissa insisted on swimming to land. David was wary but they went ahead – carefully, slowly, with no thrashing.

They were both terrified. They had to swim through a shoal of jelly fish and they were nibbled by a large barracuda – a fearsome looking fish, that thankfully doesn't prey upon humans.
