87 different countries won medals.

204 countries participated.

Four countries have won medals for the first time - Afghanistan, Togo, Tajikistan and Mauritius.

First ever golds for Bahrain, Mongolia and Panama and first individual gold for India.

Women did well in Team GB; they won nine of the golds.

According to the International Olympic Committee website a record number of athletes were tested for illegal drugs and there were stringent new testing requirements.

40 drugs cheats were caught before the games and four were caught during the games.

As far as air quality was concerned, the IOC says the competition opened on the second consecutive day of Grade I air quality, a decade-long record for Beijing.

In the other eight days, Beijing's air quality was Grade II, which still fell well within IOC standards.

The USA's Michael Phelps won eight gold medals.

Jamaica's Usain Bolt streaked across the finish line twice in 100m (a world record of 9.69 seconds) and 200m (new world record time of 19.30 seconds).
