Aims and Learning Outcomes

Aims

  • To explain the origins and aims of the Black Civil Rights movement in the USA in the 1960s
  • To analyse the role and importance of Martin Luther King in that movement

Learning Outcomes

These notes should help students to improve and develop their knowledge and understanding of such issues as:

  • The ways in which Black people suffered discrimination in the USA in the 1950s and 1960s
  • The types of protest used by the Civil Rights movement
  • Why those methods were comparatively successful
  • Why ending discrimination legally is not the same as ending discrimination in practice
